Knobs

In the TUI each knob runs from low (left / 0%) to high (right / 100%). Start near noon, then nudge while you play.

Sustain

How long notes hang and bloom after you pick.

  • Turn up Notes keep singing — a thick fuzz wall.
  • Turn down Notes decay faster; less endless sustain.

Tone

Warmth versus brightness in the fuzz.

  • Turn up Brighter, more open.
  • Turn down Darker, woollier.

Volume

Output loudness.

  • Turn up Louder.
  • Turn down Quieter.

Inspired by

Electro-Harmonix Big Muff Pi (NYC / Ram’s Head lineage) — four cascaded clip stages, narrow bandwidth, violin-like sustain, scooped mids. Smashing Pumpkins Siamese Dream, Jack White Seven Nation Army, shoegaze wall-of-fuzz beds. Sustain, Tone, Volume.

Signal path

StepWhat it does
High-pass ~70 HzInput coupling — blocks DC and sub rumble.
Sustain gainSustain → up to ~86× (1 + sustain × 85) — drives clip stages.
muff_cliptanh soft clip blended with hard ±0.82 limit — smooth sustaining fuzz.
Crossover LP / HPSplits clipped signal into low and high bands; Tone shifts crossover corners.
Mid scoopReconstructed mid band attenuated — depth scales with Sustain (~62–90% cut).
Tone tiltTone boosts high-band mix and sweeps final LP cutoff brighter.
Tone biquad LPFinal brightness control (~280 Hz–5.2 kHz).
Volume + clampVolume output trim (0.14 + volume × 1.05).

How we modeled it

Big Muff path: sustain gain → soft/hard clip blend → crossover mid scoop → tone LP. Sustain deepens saturation and scoop; Tone tilts highs and sweeps the final low-pass. Same crossover/scoop pattern as Buzz Saw, but with smooth muff_clip instead of HM-2 chainsaw clipping.

Simplifications

- Four clip stages collapsed into one muff_clip function - Passive BMP tone network approximated as crossover scoop + biquad LP - Mono only; no battery sag or input buffer stages
